Places We Plant Trees
Planeta Verde Reforestación S.A. is a member of Orinoquía Verde an association of land owners and plantations dedicated to afforestation and reforestation in the Colombian province or
departamento of Vichada. The capital of Vichada is Puerto Carreñoon the banks of the
mighty Orinoco River. The Orinoquía is named after the river
and is often referred to as the great green lung or el gran
pulmón verde in Spanish. Vichada is a land of rivers located in the great plains or llanos orientales of Colombia.
These flat lands enjoy abundant rainfall and warm weather,
being an average of only 50 to 100 meters (164 to 330 feet)
above sea level.
Most of the planting areas are located around 6° Northern
latitude. This proximity to the equator places Vichada in an
ideal zone for tropical trees and therefore carbon dioxide
("CO2") sequestration from the atmosphere. Vichada is
relatively undeveloped, as a result of which land for large
scale afforestation and reforestation is available, and
provides much needed economic activity for the
betterment of the region through local employment
and purchases.
Vivienda Housing have a financially sustainable
program building affordable, low cost housing for
working families in Central America. This
humanitarian
real estate program is an example of
socially
responsible investing at its best.
Vichada's proximity to the equator places it in
an ideal zone for tropical trees and therefore
carbon dioxide ("CO2") removal from the atmosphere.
At present the Orinoquía Verde association has over 200,000
hectares (500,000 acres) available for tropical tree planting.
Other areas in Colombia have taken note of the tree planting
efforts being made by the Orinoquía Verde members, and we
anticipate that more and more land will be made available for
afforestation and reforestation efforts in the near future
throughout Colombia.
Another area to which Planeta Verde Reforestación S.A. is
planning on providing reforestation services is the North
eastern region of Nicaragua, which was devastated by
Hurricane Felix in 2007. Some 660,000 hectares (1,630,000 acres)
of forest was destroyed by the hurricane. At present Valcor
Nicaragua S.A. has the concession to salvage the timber, after
which large scale reforestation will be required.
The North Atlantic Autonomous Region (Región Autónoma
Atlántico Norte) of Nicaragua is located between 13° and 14°
Northern latitude. Despite its Caribbean location, the area
experiences substantial rainfall, and is ideally situated for
tropical tree planting and reforestation efforts, and therefore
CO2 sequestration from the atmosphere. The region is very
poor, and large scale reforestation will provide considerable
benefits to the local economy and standard of living.
